Architect Yoo Hyun-joon's Shorts I watched the video.
To summarize the video very briefly,
South Korea focuses solely on achieving first place in paths to success defined by others, such as topping the CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test), Netflix rankings, and the Billboard charts.
While shouting 'K-culture,' they claim South Korea is a developed nation.
However, is a true developed country one that tops Netflix rankings?Isn't it rather the country that creates Netflix or the country that establishes the Billboard charts?
This short video, barely a minute long, profoundly impacted me.
I want to organize the impact it had on me through this post.
Recently, I've spent time reflecting on who I want to become.
Based on the people around me and the images I've encountered in books, I've envisioned who I wanted to be.
But now, after watching this video, I've revisited that period.
Looking back, it seems I didn't truly contemplate who I wanted to become during that time of reflection.
It feels like I merely selected the image that suited me best from a few predetermined options defined by others.
What do I truly want to do?
Why couldn't I think beyond the pre-defined notions of success others promote?
Honestly, I think I was scared.
I was afraid my current career path might crumble.
I was scared of wasting time by taking on a random challenge.
I want to share the story of YouTube with my fearful self.
I want to tell the success story of YouTube, which consumes more than half of my day.
In 2006, Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion.
Based on the current exchange rate, that's approximately $2.17 billion.
Following this massive acquisition, many anticipated YouTube's future progress, but...
In 2009, it reported a deficit of about 47 billion won.
This was over five times YouTube's revenue at the time.
People criticized Google and YouTube for this deficit.
Countless articles and criticisms emerged, claiming the YouTube acquisition was a poor decision by Google.
But Google believed in YouTube's potential.
They believed that a video-based world would eventually replace the text-based world.
With that faith, Google continued to develop YouTube without giving up.
As a result of this trust, YouTube established its current video advertising model.
(This model distributes ad revenue to content creators.)
Thanks to YouTube's advertising model, the quantity of high-quality video content gradually increased,
and YouTube transformed from a massive deficit into the world's largest video platform.
As seen in YouTube's story, the true path to success is the one no one takes.
And people criticize and dismiss that path.
So, let's not be afraid.
If you have a path you truly want to pursue, courageously try it.
It's okay if others criticize and dismiss you.
YouTube, Netflix, and SpaceX were all initially disregarded and criticized.
